Alyeska Resort Ski Cabin
Location: Girdwood, Alaska
Type: New Construction
Progress: Construction In Progress
Project Description:
Located in Girdwood, Alaska, just one hour south of Anchorage and only minutes from the legendary slopes of Alyeska Ski Resort, this 5-bedroom, 4-bathroom ski cabin is a bespoke residential retreat quietly nestled into the dense, evergreen-lined forests of Southcentral Alaska. Designed as a new construction residence currently in progress, this home responds directly to the rugged terrain, dramatic seasonal light, and expansive mountain panoramas that define the Chugach Mountain landscape.
The setting of this project is as rich in narrative as it is in aesthetic opportunity. Girdwood sits at the terminus of the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet, tucked into a valley carved by glaciers and surrounded by peaks that rise abruptly from sea-level waters to snow-covered summits. This valley is part of the Chugach Mountains, one of North America’s most striking alpine landscapes, offering accessible wilderness, extreme weather patterns, and unforgettable views year-round.
A Site-Driven Design Response:
From the earliest stages of design, the site’s dramatic topography and seasonal shifts were major guiding forces. The home’s orientation was chosen to capture panoramic water and mountain views, particularly toward the majestic ranges of Hope, framing the rugged beauty of the horizon as a constant visual anchor for daily life. Rather than sit above the land, the residence is envisioned as an extension of it, nestled into the forest with trees and terrain shaping circulation, light, and experience.
Material selections reinforce this integration. Dark timber siding and natural stone grounding elements echo the muted palette of snow-dusted tree bark, rock outcroppings, and rich organic soils found just outside the front door. These tactful exterior finishes help the structure recede into its context while giving it a refined, mountain-modern presence. Large expanses of glazing punctuate this natural shell, dissolving the barrier between interior and exterior and inviting abundant natural light throughout changing seasons.
